After the horrific acts of September 11, 2001 the United States government felt it necessary to take action in making sure that this event would not likely happen again. Although most individuals were made aware that some necessary changes and amendments would likely to be made that would protect the citizens of America, nearly all people are unaware about the depth that these new rules go into our private lives.

Of the different changes made, the most popular and widely known is referred to as the Patriot Act. This little clause generally leads to an open book of new actions that the government may take against anyone suspected of terrorist activity. It is now made legal under these circumstances to listen to your telephone conversations without any prior notification and cell phone tapping does take place. Many individuals are scared and quite shocked that the government can simply infringe upon their rights and freedoms; however, these officials believe that this is necessary to prevent another large terrorist episode from occurring again. In the long run, each person will have a different opinion on the matter. Many believe that this act is necessary and others are outraged at this new installment into our laws.
